So yeah, I was a big fan of this one. That moment of realisation I got the share with the Munitorum adept when the ship came down and it wasn’t an evacuation ship. On my first listening, I’d thought the story was kind of meh until then, but that really woke me up. And then when Alpha 6-Freist reveals that the humans were all going to die anyway from the radiation anyway. And then she breaks his neck and calls it mercy. And the best bit, she’s not exactly wrong. Even if he had somehow survived the Tyranids, he would have died slowly of rad-poisoning. Between being eaten alive by Xenos, dying of cancer and having one’s neck broken, I suppose the Munitorum Adept got a good deal (relatively speaking).
Though rad-poisoning is definitely the coolest way to die.(rollondrumsnarepunintendedimverysorry.)
Out of all of the Ad Mech POVs I’ve read (and there are quite a few) I think Alpha 6-Friest has to be my favourite. No matter how much meat they replace with steel and iron, they are still human deep down and I always find it interesting to see how writers portray this.
I loved when one of her Skitarii dies to a Cranifex and he thinks that the plasma breath is like the warm breath of Mars and 6-Friest thinks to herself that he always was a poet. This was totally unexpected for me and although it was only a little thing, I was blown away by it.
When 6-Friest realises she’s going to die, it’s alittle hard to feel sorry for her. But in her defence, she takes it like a champ. It was cool so see that she could practice the life she preached to the adept.
One scene I thought was abit too much was when the Arch Magos is saying goodbye to Alpha 6-Friest and he moves the servitor to put an arm on her shoulder but then doesn’t. I mean, we get it, the Mechanicum are uncomfortable with their emotions. I thought they’d been doing a pretty good job right up until that end bit, but I’m not going to let that ruin the whole story for me.
I hope you guys enjoyed this story as much as I did. Omnissiah guide you and as always…
