‘The Purity of Ignorance’ was a standout in ‘Crusade and other stories’ and is one of the stories that I keep going back to. While I have yet to do more than dip my toe into the Horusian wars, I am intrigued by the character of Ianthe, the main character of this story and many other audio dramas by John French. She’s a former Militarum Soldier who now has joined the Inquisition under Inquisitor Covenant.
Alongside Ianthe’s story, is a seemingly unconnected story about a Hive Mistress basically just having a nice day and enjoying the luxuries that come with ruling a Hive Spire. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to say that the two stories do of course end up being connected and in quite a satisfying way.
This story has got some really good action and the third person narration from the two POV characters (Ianthe and the Hive Mistress) are quite well written and engaging. It’s got some cool reveals that really make the story memorable and I’m keen to talk about them in my spoiler review.
All in all the story packs a lot of enjoyment into its 41 minutes and although I know practically nothing about the Horusian Wars I still found the story engaging and worth listening to multiple times and so I’m pretty confident in recommending it to anyone looking for a new audio drama to listen to.
